STA Helmet Collection for IAIA

December 7, 2008 | Comments Off

The Institute for American Indian Arts (IAIA) is a college for Native Americans in New Mexico (check out www.iaia.edu for more info on the school). The college is starting a lacrosse team, and a former STA lax parent who serves on the board of the college asked if there were any helmets that St. Albans players could donate to the college’s lax team. Given the connection we formed with the Onondaga Nation after our trip to Syracuse in April, 2008, it would be great if we could continue our Native American lax partnership by helping out this new team. If you have any lax helmets that you would be able to donate, please send them to the address below:

Sandy Etzel
Institute of American Indian Arts
83 Avan Nu Po Road
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87508

Thanks in advance to any of you who have a helmet to spare,

Coach Lester

Shootout Practices & Game Schedule

July 11, 2008 | Comments Off

The first STX Shootout (technically known as The Shootout by Brine, but we’re referring to it by its old name) practice will be on Wednesday, July 16th, from 6-8 p.m. We will not have practice on Thursday, July 17th due to field conflicts, thus we are moving our first practice up one day to Wednesday. The team will also practice on Friday, July 18th from 6-8 and Saturday, July 17th from 3-5 p.m. The game schedule and additional information can be found at www.the-shootout.com

The STA varsity team (and invited JV players) will practice for the Georgetown Top Gun Shootout on Wednesday, July 2 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, July 5th from 4-6 p.m. The practices were originally scheduled for July 3 and July 5; however, due to the July 4th holiday weekend and STA field availability, we have moved the first practice up one day. If players cannot make that practice due to other plans, that’s fine, but they should contact Coach Lester directly so he can plan accordingly.

The annual Lacrosse Alumni Game will be held on Saturday, May 31st at 1 p.m. on Satterlee-Henderson Field. The game will pit the returning STA varsity players vs. any and all STA lax alums (the class of 2008 will be included on the alum side). There will also be a cookout after the game. (Note the time change to accommodate a shift in STA’s baseball game Saturday!)

Players should plan on providing their own equipment. If you need equipment or if you have any questions, please contact head coach Malcolm Lester at 202-537-5703, mlester@cathedral.org. Come celebrate the stellar season that STA lacrosse had (which included a victory over national power West Genesee in Syracuse), and have fun with former teammates. If you are not participating, feel free to come on out and watch; parents are invited as well. (Alums, go to www.stalax.org for news and great photos from the 2008 season, as well as many pictures of STA lax alums).

When St. Albans traveled to Syracuse, NY, last month to play West Genesee, the Bulldogs also visited the Onondaga Nation near Syracuse to watch a lacrosse game and meet students. To thank the Onondaga Nation for their hospitality, a box of 2008 STA lacrosse t-shirts was airlifted to Syracuse. Coach Lester received these photos shortly thereafter, showing that the t-shirts are being put to good use.

A huge thank you to Susan Grayson and Hunter Schoenfeld for their great work in organizing the day’s activities. Here is the schedule:

10:00 - 11:00 a.m.        Varsity Team Clinic for Lower School Students
2:00 p.m.                     Varsity vs. Collegiate
4:00 p.m.                     JV vs. Wootton

Lunch for Players.  After the Varsity game, lunch will be served to Varsity players near the Bulldog statue.  Sandwiches and drinks will be provided.

2008 Lacrosse T-Shirts. The popular varsity roster t-shirt and a custom designed t-shirt by STA’s very own defenseman and artist extraordinaire #14, Brian Bates, will be on sale Friday during the clinic and games Saturday.  Roster t-shirts are a great way to remember the season and are the team’s primary fundraising effort. JV parents will sell shirts during the Varsity game and Varsity parents will sell during the JV game.
