Mr. Graham Stars in Alumni Game

June 3, 2009 | Comments Off

STA Upper School math teacher Richard Graham–pictured here with Coach Lester–starred in the recent alumni game on May 30, scoring a goal on attack and dazzling the crowd with both his leather helmet and acrobatic moves. While Mr. Graham is not a St. Albans alumnus, he earns honorary status as a result of serving as head JV lax coach for many years and for teaching math here for 17 years. Also, Mr. Graham’s son Armand is not only a St. Albans alumnus, but he is a former STA lax captain, All-IAC player, and national champion at Princeton. Lester and Graham Mr. Graham was a lacrosse and football standout at Severn School, and he continued his career at Princeton, where he started in lacrosse and played lightweight football. He was on the last Princeton lax team to win an Ivy League title before Princeton began its Ivy dominance in the 1990s, led by many STA alums, including Andy Moe, Jesse Hubbard, Andy Hubbard, and Winship Ross. We hope to see Mr. Graham at next year’s alumni game, scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2010, at Noon! (Thank you to the more than 30 STA alumni who showed up for the 2009 game and put a hurt on the returning varsity squad).

Goodbye To A Friend of STA Lax

February 25, 2009 | Comments Off

Jim Range, long time companion to STA lax parent coordinator Anni McKillop, and all around supporter extraordinaire of Greg McKillop ’09 and Jess McKillop ’12, passed away on January 20, 2009, due to complications from cancer.

Jim’s obituary appeared in the Washington Post on Thursday, January 22, 2009, and on the website dedicated to his memory, www.jimrange.com. He was a well-known environmental lawyer and lobbyist who dedicated his entire career to the preservation of the environment and conservation of wildlife. Two former United States Senators gave remarks at the memorial service held at Fletchers Boat House on Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

As evidenced by the enormous number of people who turned out for the outside ceremony on a cold and snowy day, he will be missed greatly by the conservation community.

He will also be missed greatly by all lovers of STA lacrosse. He was ever present at the games, always next to his Anni. His stalwart support and optimism were evident to all. The boys were lucky indeed to have such a decent, kind, and committed supporter.

STA Helmet Collection for IAIA

December 7, 2008 | Comments Off

The Institute for American Indian Arts (IAIA) is a college for Native Americans in New Mexico (check out www.iaia.edu for more info on the school). The college is starting a lacrosse team, and a former STA lax parent who serves on the board of the college asked if there were any helmets that St. Albans players could donate to the college’s lax team. Given the connection we formed with the Onondaga Nation after our trip to Syracuse in April, 2008, it would be great if we could continue our Native American lax partnership by helping out this new team. If you have any lax helmets that you would be able to donate, please send them to the address below:

Sandy Etzel
Institute of American Indian Arts
83 Avan Nu Po Road
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87508

Thanks in advance to any of you who have a helmet to spare,

Coach Lester

STA Gets “Props” w/ Onondaga + NY

October 4, 2008 | Comments Off

The Onondaga Nation has put an article up on its website - www.onondaganation.org - about STA’s trip to New York in April, 2008.

St. Albans has been getting major visibility in New York state, as the lacrosse website www.justlacrosse.com, which covers lacrosse in central New York, also printed the article.

When St. Albans traveled to Syracuse, NY, last month to play West Genesee, the Bulldogs also visited the Onondaga Nation near Syracuse to watch a lacrosse game and meet students. To thank the Onondaga Nation for their hospitality, a box of 2008 STA lacrosse t-shirts was airlifted to Syracuse. Coach Lester received these photos shortly thereafter, showing that the t-shirts are being put to good use.
