Weiss ‘06 Leads Colby Service Effort

November 30, 2008 | Comments Off

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College men’s lacrosse team and the Waterville Police Department recently joined forces to raise more than $10,000 in the first annual Bench Press for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Each member of the Colby men’s lacrosse team collected pledges that were for per repetition of 135 pounds on the bench press. The team set up the bench outside Pulver Pavilion on the Colby campus. The team sold bracelets, passed out flyers, and educated the student body on Pulmonary Fibrosis. Members of the team then benched 135 pounds as many times as possible to raise money.
Junior Max Weiss was a leader in organizing the event and helped man the bench press for the entire 12-hour event.
“It’s clear that this event meant a great deal to the Colby lacrosse family and in particular to Max. He was there for the entire day supporting his teammates while collecting the most pledges and the second most amount of money,” Colby men’s lacrosse coach Jon Thompson said. “Max has proven that he has a passion for being civically engaged on campus and I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Thompson also was happy to partner with the Waterville Police Department and police chief Joe Massey on the venture.
“I cannot thank Chief Massey enough. Not only did he help raise money and awareness for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, but he lifted the weights right alongside our men,” Thompson said. “His involvement in the event was a wonderful gesture on the part of the Waterville Police Department.”
Pulmonary Fibrosis is a devastating disease that involves scarring of the lung tissue. Often misdiagnosed, people with Pulmonary Fibrosis experience extreme discomfort as the air sacs of the lungs gradually become replaced by fibrotic tissue. When the scar forms, the tissue becomes thicker causing an irreversible loss of the tissue’s ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream.
Close to 40,000 people die every year from Pulmonary Fibrosis in the United States. More than 200,000 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with the disease and an additional 50,000 are likely to be diagnosed in 2009.

The annual Lacrosse Alumni Game will be held on Saturday, May 31st at 1 p.m. on Satterlee-Henderson Field. The game will pit the returning STA varsity players vs. any and all STA lax alums (the class of 2008 will be included on the alum side). There will also be a cookout after the game. (Note the time change to accommodate a shift in STA’s baseball game Saturday!)

Players should plan on providing their own equipment. If you need equipment or if you have any questions, please contact head coach Malcolm Lester at 202-537-5703, mlester@cathedral.org. Come celebrate the stellar season that STA lacrosse had (which included a victory over national power West Genesee in Syracuse), and have fun with former teammates. If you are not participating, feel free to come on out and watch; parents are invited as well. (Alums, go to www.stalax.org for news and great photos from the 2008 season, as well as many pictures of STA lax alums).

cornellbrownalums20082.jpgOn Saturday, April 26 several STA Bulldogs met on the Cornell University lacrosse field in a game that had Ivy League crown implications. The 15th ranked Brown Bears (10-2), lead by STA’s Brian Asher ‘04 (captain), Jack Walsh ‘05, Thomas Muldoon ‘06 and Michael Miller ‘06, took on the 8th ranked Cornell (9-3) with Big Red defenseman Courtney Baker ‘06. In a hard fought battle, Muldoon scored two goals, Walsh had a pair of assists, and Asher scooped two ground balls for the Brunos. Though Cornell won the match and with it a share of the Ivy League title, Brown remains in the hunt for its own share of the title as it takes on Princeton on May 3. The attached photo captures the STA ‘06 contingent of Thomas Muldoon, Courtney Baker and Michael Miller. View full article for larger photo. Read more

magruder.jpgEvan and Trent Magruder ‘04 of Princeton were featured in a March 26 article in Inside Lacrosse. Click here for full article. Following is an excerpt:

On one side of the hallway, Evan Magruder, senior back-up goalie for the Tigers, is now showering with the rest of the team. On the other side, Trent Magruder, senior writer for the Daily Princetonian student newspaper, is going through his own post-game ritual. The two are identical twins. Oh, are they identical. Even by identical twin standards, these two are nearly impossible to tell apart.

portrait-roho.jpgRecent STA graduate Andrew Rohacik has committed to play lacrosse next year at the University of Delaware, which advanced this year to the NCAA semi-finals against eventual champion Johns Hopkins. Andrew is quoted in the May 31 edition of the Wilmington News Journal:

Shillinglaw’s incoming 2007 class is already set, though it did grow by one after Saturday’s game when Andrew Rohacik, a second-team All-Metropolitan (D.C. area) faceoff man from St. Alban’s decided he wanted to play for the Blue Hens.

“I knew I was going to Delaware, but I wasn’t going to play lacrosse in college,” Rohacik said. “Then I watched the game [against Hopkins] and it got me fired up. Watching Alex Smith [UD's record-setting face-off man] … It may sound weird, but they seemed to click well as a team. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the coach. During the game, I wanted them to win so bad. I just figured, I can’t sit and watch. I have to play.” Click here to read the full article.
