Alumni In the News: Jack Walsh
October 29, 2009
Presented at the Brown Lacrosse Banquet, Fall 2009
The Dom Starsia Coaches Award
The recently named Dom Starsia coaches’ award is given by the coaching staff to the player who best represents the spirit of Brown lacrosse year in and year out. Thinking of the description “spirit of Brown lacrosse” brings to mind several great men of this program, but there is one who best characterizes the true traits of Brown Lacrosse. What are these “True Traits?” — the joy of fierce competition, the endless pursuit of physical and technical greatness, and a love of life. This year’s winner is the face and smile of Brown Lacrosse. His infectious devotion, commitment and loyalty to Brown University and our Lacrosse program are the greatest. While his outstanding play does come close to matching his over-the-top spirit and enthusiasm (he was our 6th leading goal scorer in 2009 and 3rd for ground balls), it is the energy and vibe he brought to each practice, each game, each lift… always…. that made him our spiritual and emotional leader. He returned to campus each spring physically fit and prepared. Few pumped up his teammates more: he understood that one of his roles as a captain was to put personal goals secondary to the team’s goals. Few on our team played with his intellect and creativity. He was our leader, and he did things the right way, and all with that smile. The 2009 Dom Starsia Coaches’ Award recipient: Urban Studies graduate Jack Walsh ‘09.
Note: Dom Starsia is a Hall of Fame coach at UVA; he is also a Brown alumnus and former head coach at Brown.
STA Laxers Take Part in Fundraisers
August 4, 2009
STA Lax was busy on and off the field this summer. Recently, two groups of Bulldogs took part in separate community service ventures.
On Friday, July 31, assistant coach Robby Walsh, Allan Stafford ’09, Arya Mortazavi ’10, and Pat Dougherty ’10 completed “Bike to the Beach,” cycling all the way from Gonzaga High School in DC to Bethany Beach in Delaware, 100 miles away. The STA Laxers and 250 other bicyclists left Gonzaga at 4:30 a.m. and arrived in the early afternoon. “We’re a little sore, but we made it,” texted Mortazavi once the STA lax contingent reached the beach.
Coach Walsh is one of the founders of Bike to the Beach, and this was his 3rd year completing the trek. Each cyclist had to raise $500, with the money going towards Autism Speaks, which raises funds and awareness for autism. Head coach Malcolm Lester, who met up with the Bulldogs at Gonzaga to see them off, vowed to “bike to the beach” next year. “My hat is off to Coach Walsh, Dot, Allan, and Arya,” he said. “I did not have the mettle to do it this year, but I will biking to the beach in 2010 and I would love to get a large posse of STA players, alums, and parents to support Coach Walsh and this wonderful cause.” For more information, go to www.biketothebeach.org. A picture of the STA cyclists, shortly before starting the trip, will be posted as soon as we get a hold of it.
The following day, Jack Walsh ’05, Jack Balaban ’08, Guy Van Syckle ’08, and Coach Lester participated in the 2nd Annual Millerstrong Lacrosse Classic, held at South River High School in Edgewater, MD. The Millerstrong Lacrosse Classic was started to “support raising awareness for the teens and young adults battling cancer in our community and around the country.” Former DeMatha goalie Matt Miller ’08 (now at Drexel) was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the start of his senior year. He underwent surgery and numerous rounds of chemotherapy, and was able to not only complete his senior year, but also start in goal for the Stags. His mother started “Millerstrong: The We Believe Foundation” both to increase cancer awareness, and to raise money to give to families who have children battling cancer.
The Millerstrong Classic featured two all-star games between college and professional players. Coach Lester served as coach of the one of the teams; he was fortunate to have Van Syckle in goal for him, as the Johns Hopkins netminder was sharp all afternoon. Recently graduated Brown captain Walsh showed that he had not missed a beat since his college days, as he netted two goals and almost scored a “Secrets-esque” behind-the-back goal from his knees. Middlebury sophomore Balaban scored a goal and anchored his team on attack. For an account of the event from Inside Lacrosse, click here.
For more information on Millerstrong, access www.millerstrong.com.
The picture features Coach Lester, Balaban, Walsh, Van Syckle and young Teddy Lester, who enjoyed the day’s lacrosse action.
Ferguson Named MVP of Showcase
June 24, 2009
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – St. Albans graduate Roger Ferguson ’09 was named MVP of the South team following the US Lacrosse National Senior Showcase at Bryant University on June 20.
Ferguson’s squad lost to a tough East team in its semifinal match-up, and beat the West all-star team in the consolation game. At the conclusion of Showcase, a Most Valuable Player was picked from each 24-player team, and Ferguson was the South team’s honoree. In addition to playing stellar defense and scooping up numerous ground balls, long-stick middie Ferguson notched two assists on the day.

The Providence location was perfect for Ferguson—not only will be attending nearby Brown University in the fall, but his grandparents and other family members live near Providence and they were able to watch him in the Showcase. The last Bulldog to participate in the Senior Showcase was Courtney Baker ’06, a defenseman for Cornell.
A first-team All-Met selection and a US Lacrosse and Under Armour All-American, Ferguson will participate in the prestigious Under Armour All-America game at Towson University on June 27. In the 4-year history of the Under Armour game, Ferguson is the second Bulldog to be selected. Thomas Muldoon ’06—an All-American attackman at Brown– played in the inaugural Under Armour All-America game, scoring a goal for the South squad.
STA Garners Post-Season Honors
June 10, 2009
St. Albans Lacrosse earned numerous honors at the US Lacrosse-Secondary School selection meeting on June 8.
Roger Ferguson ’09 and Chris Landon ’09 were named US Lacrosse All-Americans, the first time since 1991 that St. Albans has had two players receive that award in the same year. Five players total were selected from the Washington, DC, region. STA lacrosse players have earned All-American honors 14 times, dating back to 1989.
Ramsey Bates ’09 was named a US Lacrosse Academic All-American. Only two Academic All-Americans were selected for the Washington, DC, region. Bates is the seventh St. Albans varsity lacrosse player to be named Academic All-American, dating back to the inception of the award in 1994.
Also, St. Albans varsity coach Robby Walsh was selected as the “Assistant Coach of the Year.” One assistant coach in the region is selected for this award annually.
Congratulations to Roger Ferguson, Chris Landon, Ramsey Bates, Coach Walsh, and the 2009 St. Albans Bulldogs!

Mr. Graham Stars in Alumni Game
June 3, 2009
STA Upper School math teacher Richard Graham–pictured here with Coach Lester–starred in the recent alumni game on May 30, scoring a goal on attack and dazzling the crowd with both his leather helmet and acrobatic moves. While Mr. Graham is not a St. Albans alumnus, he earns honorary status as a result of serving as head JV lax coach for many years and for teaching math here for 17 years. Also, Mr. Graham’s son Armand is not only a St. Albans alumnus, but he is a former STA lax captain, All-IAC player, and national champion at Princeton.
Mr. Graham was a lacrosse and football standout at Severn School, and he continued his career at Princeton, where he started in lacrosse and played lightweight football. He was on the last Princeton lax team to win an Ivy League title before Princeton began its Ivy dominance in the 1990s, led by many STA alums, including Andy Moe, Jesse Hubbard, Andy Hubbard, and Winship Ross. We hope to see Mr. Graham at next year’s alumni game, scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2010, at Noon! (Thank you to the more than 30 STA alumni who showed up for the 2009 game and put a hurt on the returning varsity squad).
Alumni Game, Sat. @ Noon
May 26, 2009
The annual St. Albans Lacrosse Alumni Game will be held on Saturday, May 30th at Noon on Satterlee-Henderson Field. The game will pit the returning STA varsity players vs. any and all STA lax alums (the class of 2009 will be included on the alum side). There will also be a cookout after the game.
Players should plan on providing their own equipment. If you need equipment or if you have any questions, please contact head coach Malcolm Lester at 202-537-5703, mlester@cathedral.org. If you are not participating, feel free to come on out to watch. Also, access www.stalax.org for news and great photos from the 2009 season, as well as STA lax pictures from the past.
